Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Open, Technology Specialist

UDL is an educational approach to curriculum and instruction using technology to enable students with diverse learning needs to be successful in the classroom (www.cast.org).

CATS Online...

The development of CATS Online came about due to accommodations that are “part of the student’s ongoing instructional program” and “for the purpose of students accessing the general education curriculum” being allowed on the state-wide assessment (- 703 KAR 5:070 and KDE). With the huge trend moving towards Universal Design for Learning and over 1300 schools having access to textreaders, there needed to be a way for students to use these accommodations while being assessed.

Working in part with ecollege.com, makers of Kentucky Virtual High School, Kentucky Department of Education has made the CATS assessment available to those students who qualify.

Who is eligible (from KDE):

    1. Students in KCCT grade levels with an IEP, PSP (LEP), or 504 Plan which includes the need for a “reader” as an instructional and assessment accommodation.
    2. Students who routinely use textreader or screenreader technology in order to access printed material in classroom instruction and assessment.
    3. Students who have accessed and used the CATS Online Practice Area.
